begin,start,end,stop这是词义正好相反的两组词。begin 的反义词为 end;start 的反义词为 stop.


begin 表示“开始”，其内涵是“使处于进程中”
Work on it had begun before my sister left.
这座房子在我姐姐离开之前就已经动工了。
Almost immediately he began to complain about the weather,…
他几乎马上便开始抱怨天气了，……

start 表示“开始”，其内涵是“启程”。例如，“那次会议是上星期开始的”(The meeting began last week.)会议是个“过程”，在这个意义上用 begin 恰当；而“千里之行始于足下”(A thousand-li journey is started by taking the first step.)所包含的意义是启步， 所以用 start 恰当。
He started to complain about this wicked world…
他开始抱怨这万恶的世道了。……
注：begin 和 start 有时可以通用，如上面的第二句与第三句。即使可以互换，它们含义的侧重点也有所不同。某过程的停止实际上是“结束”，这时应当用 end。
The dream he had had for so many years ended there.
他做了那么许多年的梦就此结束了。

那个故事是怎么结束的？
注：end 可用作名词。
Here is the end of the railway.
这里是这条铁路的终点站。
In the end we stay at home and look after everything.

作为名词的 end,其反义词为 beginning。另外，begin 与 start 还有一个常用的同义词 commence。这个词与 begin 的词义几乎没有差别，只是 commence 为正式用语，而 begin 却非常普通。法律、宗教活动或战争中的大战役比较庄严，在需要表示“开始”时应当用 commence。而 commence 的反义词为 conclude，这两动词的相应名词分别为 commencement 和 conclusion。处于运动中的物体的停止，实际上是“由动到静”，这时应当用 stop。

He wants you to stop.
他要你停车。
Roy stopped his bus and telephoned the police.
罗依停下了公共汽车，就给警察打了电话。
注：cease 也有停止的意思。是 stop 的同义词。cease 适用于状态或情况，而 stop 适用于行为或进程。如两个人吵架，你大声道“别吵了！”用英语说应为：Stop it! 如何两个人吵够了，不再吵了，这时是一种平静的气氛，应当用 cease。
The quarrel has ceased now.
争吵停止了。

另外，关于 cease 和 stop 后跟不定式的问题，应当引起注意，因为它们表达了完全不同的含义。
He stopped to laugh.
他停下手头的工作哈哈大笑起来。
He ceased to laugh. 和 He stopped laughing.
都是“他停止了哈哈大笑”的意思

finish


finish,complete作为动词在一起比较时，这两个词的一般含义是“做完”、“完成”，有时可以互换使用。然而，有时它们却有明显的词义差别。


finish表示过去某个时候着手做的事已经做完，或者表示对已经做完的事进行精密加工.


Here you can see two workers who, between them, have just finished cutting three cart-loads of golden brown macaroni stalks.
在这里，你可以看到两个劳动者，他们俩协力割下了三车金黄色的通心面秸。
As soon as he had finished, Jenny told him she wanted to go home.
他一讲完，珍妮就告诉他说她想回家。
This machine part needs surface finishing.

The writer has finished (or completed) the novel.
但是如果作为读者说“我已经看完这部小说了”，用英语说却只能是I have finished the novel.
不过，如果你是文学系的学生，老师布置了任务，要读完这部小说，那么又非用complete不可了。如果要用英语表达“这位作家已经写完那部小说了”，这两个词都可以用。
By the end of next year, they will have finished work on the new stadium.
到明年年底，他们将建成这个新体育场。




而complete侧重表示做完或完成某工作，特别是一项任务，或者把某工作圆满结束。


The house was completed five moths ago.
这座房子是5个月前竣工的。
They had just had enough time to swim out of danger when the boat again completed a circle.
他们刚游出危险区，这时快艇又完成了一圈的运动。
注：完成一个圆周的运动，用complete是很准确的。
A few cars, however, completed the race.
有几辆车跑完了比赛的全程。
