Avatar is the correct spelling, but you still won't find it in most dictionaries.

the correct defination of avatar is someone, or something that represents you, it can be in a game, or a forum, or heck in real life that is a symbol of of you. This is a basic symbolization as in the avater symbolizes you, it gives the impression that it was you, while it is not you.

this is the defination in chinese, although that this is not perfact (there is no meaning of symbolization in the word) but since with any translation there are words that cannot be translated or cannot be perfectly translated, i think this might be one of them
