Paying Employees to Be Healthier

Some companies are giving employees, cash, prizes or big discounts on health insurance premiums in exchange for participating in programs designed to improve their long-term health, the New York Times reports today. The effort is yet another attempt to slow the rise in health care costs. Among the examples cited by the story:

Intuit, the software company that sells Quicken and TurboTax, pays employees $100 each to fill out an online medical questionnaire. When their answers indicate they have modifiable health risks, like a smoking habit, they are directed to programs that can help them reduce those risks.
A bank holding company called BB&T gives its 24,000 employees a 20% discount on their insurance premiums if they fill out a questionnaire, have blood work done, and take a fitness test on a stationary bike each year. Those who do not meet “medical norms” are assigned to work with a nurse. The company’s benefits manager tells the Times that patients who aren’t “making sufficient progress” can be dropped from the program and lose the discount.
Carlson Companies, which owns the Radisson hotel chain, among other businesses, will launch a program later this year that will give employees with type 2 diabetes regular “report cards” that track measures such as smoking habits, blood pressure and blood sugar. Employees who show improvements will “be able to choose between cash or merchandise worth in the range of $100,” the article says.
If programs such as these work, great — though it does seem a bit strange to us that people would be more motivated by the prospect of, say, a free DVD player than by, say, dramatically lowering their risk of having a heart attack.
