Should Students be given summer holiday homework?
After having a long hard time of studying for exams, students can finally take a break with the long hot summer holiday. Well, not quite. There are still summer holiday homework to be completed. I strongly believe that students should not be given summer hoilday homework because of a number of reasons.
Firstly, summer holiday is supposed to be a rest time for students. How can the students rest at all if so many summer holiday homework are given to them? Summer holiday will lose its function if students are being trained even at rest time.
You'd say, 'But summer holiday homework is designed for students to learn more during summer time!' The truth is, I don't see there's any function of summer holiday homework except for allowing publishers to gain more money. There are two main kinds of summer holiday homework. The first ones are the ones training you on what you've learn, providing chance for revision. However, during exam time, students have revised much and really don't need more revision during summer time. The second ones are the ones pre-teaching next year's topics. These exercises are supposed to 'help students to learn more, so they may catch up easlier next year.' However, some of the students cannot understand the topic simply by reading the books, they need teachers' help. Others can easily catch up without the help of the homework. So the summer holiday homework is not functioning at all.
Nowadays' students are very busy during summer time. Most of them have joined classes of some kind, or are going to other countries. Activities of this kind are good for students because they can at the same time relax and learn from such OLEs, and this kind of activities can only be organized in the summer time, when students may have more free time. However, students are getting so bust that they could not finish the summer holiday homework, or they'd simply copy from the answer, where the whole book would be wasted.
Because of the above reasons, I strongly believe that students should not be given summer holiday homework as it is not effective. For alternatives, schools may encourage students to join CCA or OLE activities, and encourage them to self-learn during summer time. For those students who think that they may need a bit more training, of course they may buy and do some exercises on their own, but I think that forcing every student to finish a pile of summer holiday homework is not needed at all. |
