You don't lock the door of the room.. all you can do is to lock the door of the single unit that you are using. that's why some people don't care whether it is co-ed or single-sex - they don't care as long as they have locked doors to separate units. but for some very religious Catholics (I go to a college with Jesuit tradition) it's not that comfortable..
And as for the_Sun's question, yes I live in D.C., but I came back to China days ago for summer. Currently in Shenzhen :D
